Reading Order
Sanderson's Cosmere
by Brandon Sanderson
Sanderson's Cosmere Reading Order
A shared universe spanning multiple worlds, where every magic system follows hard rules and every book connects in ways you won't see coming. The most ambitious construction project in modern fantasy.
Reading Order
Optimised for maximum Cosmere payoff — not pure publication order. Each series works standalone; connections build over time.
⚡All three are essential. The original trilogy — heist fantasy with one of the best magic systems in the genre.
📖Warbreaker (optional, free on Sanderson's site) and Edgedancer (novella) are both positioned right before Oathbringer — that's where their connections pay off most.
⚡Read Era 2 before continuing to Stormlight 4 — the interleaving pays off in Rhythm of War and The Lost Metal.
📖Three standalone Cosmere stories written during the pandemic and originally funded via Kickstarter. Best read after Rhythm of War or Wind and Truth — all are self-contained but reward readers who know the broader Cosmere.
⚡ Essential (12 books)
Both Mistborn trilogies + full Stormlight Archive. These carry the main Cosmere narrative.
📖 Optional (4 books)
Warbreaker (free on Sanderson's site, adds Stormlight depth) + the three Secret Project novellas — all standalone, all rewarding after Era 2.
🔀 Novellas (2 books)
Edgedancer and Dawnshard — short, best read in the positions listed above.
Where to start
- → New to Sanderson? Start with The Final Empire. Self-contained, best magic system intro, fastest payoff.
- → Want epic scale immediately? Start with The Way of Kings. Longer investment but the most ambitious book in the Cosmere.
- → Want a quick taste first? Warbreaker is free on his website, standalone, and a good test of whether you like the style.
What to know
- → Each series is fully readable standalone — you don't need to read everything to enjoy individual books.
- → Connections become richer as you read more, especially by Stormlight book 3+.
- → Mistborn: Secret History is a novella with massive spoilers — only after completing Era 1.
- → Era 2 Mistborn can be read anytime after finishing Era 1 — even before starting Stormlight.
- → Warbreaker's connection to Stormlight is a genuine treat — reading it before Way of Kings pays off in book 3+.
