The story begins with Kristopher Knight, a physicist from 2024, who has a stroke and enters a coma. He wakes up in Ireland in 1369 as John de la Roche, the son of an Anglo-Norman lord, living in Corke, Ireland. He learns he is living a past life and must complete a mission before he can return. John is kidnapped and taken to Castlelough to meet the Irish King of Desmond. The king is trying to unite Ireland, against the English king's orders, and hopes a union with his daughter, Amy, will bring about peace. Amy takes John swimming in Lough Leane, where he encounters the Lady of the Lake, who takes them to Agartha, a land within Inner Earth. She tells John that her kingdom is threatened and that only John and his newfound power can save them. John must learn how to use his power and get help from a dragon that has been sleeping for a thousand years to save Agartha, so he can return to his own time.
