They call it the Blight - a creeping dread that steals the light from eyes, twists flesh into mockeries, and leaves villages like Oakhaven hollowed-out husks haunted by the shuffling remnants of those they once held dear. This is no common plague, but a deeper, ancient corruption gnawing at the roots of the world. Young Elara, orphaned by this nightmare, flees the grotesque transformation of her own kin, thrust from the simple warmth of home into a world teetering on the precipice of an age of darkness. Her flight is a desperate scrabble for survival, her only comforts cold indeed: a shard of obsidian, black and smooth as a raven's eye, humming with a disquieting resonance, found near the ill-omened Whispering Mines; a sly, four-legged companion whose twilight fur seems to drink the shadows; and burgeoning abilities - a startling swiftness, senses that pierce the gloom, a worrying kinship with the very darkness she runs from - that feel less like gifts and more like grim necessities on a perilous road. Driven north by whispers of sanctuary, her path winds through lands scarred by monstrous things warped by the Blight's touch and shadowed by figures of ill-intent.
