Synopsis

Kell is one of the last Antariโ€”magicians with a rare ability to travel between parallel Londons: Red, Grey, White, and once, Black. He serves as an ambassador between worlds, but his black market activities land him with a magical artefact that could be the end of all the Londons.

What makes this different

Few fantasy novels have the architectural nerve to build not one world but four, each a variation on a single city, each haunted by what the others gained or lost. Schwab's premise is not merely clever โ€” it restructures the portal fantasy genre entirely, replacing the familiar doorway between mundane and magical with a spectrum of Londons that comment on one another like dark mirrors. The magic system, tied to blood and will rather than rote incantation, feels genuinely embodied rather than mechanical. The pacing moves like a smuggler โ€” quick, purposeful, occasionally reckless. Schwab balances swashbuckling momentum with quieter moments of world-texture, and the Grey London pickpocket Lila Bard arrives like a lit fuse, shifting the novel's center of gravity the moment she appears. Tonal surprises accumulate with discipline rather than chaos. For a reader who has drifted from fantasy feeling underserved by thin world-building or flat protagonists, this is a confident corrective โ€” cinematic in scope, precise in its imagination, and genuinely difficult to abandon at chapter's end.
